Updated July 2026.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content to be the direct answer an engine returns — in AI Overviews, chatbots, and zero-click results — rather than a link the user must click. It overlaps heavily with generative engine optimization (GEO).
Why does AEO matter?
Most searches now end without a click: 68.01% of US searches ended without a click between January and April 2026 (SparkToro/Similarweb, published June 8, 2026 — US only), up from 60.45% in 2024. Google’s AI Overviews alone reach 2.5B monthly users. When the answer is delivered on the results surface, being the cited answer matters more than the blue link.
How is AEO different from SEO?
Classic SEO optimizes for ranking a page; AEO optimizes for being extracted as the answer — concise, well-structured, source-attributed content an engine can lift with confidence. It also shapes buying: 69% of B2B buyers chose a different vendor than planned based on AI guidance (G2, March 2026).
